Biography

Ursuline d'Abbadie was born about 1696 in Acadie, Nouvelle-France.^[1] Her father was Jean-Vincent d'Abbadie and her mother was called Mathilde, the daughter of Madokawando, chief of the Abenaquis.^[1][2]

Around 1715 at Rivière St-Jean Acadia, Ursuline married Louis d'Amours de Chauffours, son of Mathieu d'Amours and Louise Guyon.^[1][2] The couple had two sons born at Rivière St-Jean: Joseph (1718)^[3] and Jean-Baptiste (1720) (Uncertain),^[3] and a daughter named Marie-Agnès^[4]

Her son Joseph was on a list of prisoners in Halifax with his wife and 8 children. Although Ursuline is not named on the list, it is likely that she was with them. ^[6][7] After the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1763, the Acadian prisoners were set free and many, instead of settling in the Colony of Nova Scotia, chose to go to a French Colony like Miquelon.

She was listed at age 71 on the 1767 census in Miquelon with her son Joseph, his wife and their children. ^[8] It was noted that she had come from Halifax.

In 1767, the French government decided that the islands were too small and too poor for the Acadians. and deported them from Miquelon to France.

Ursuline died on 18 January 1768 at the Hôpital de Saint-Pol-de-Léon, Bretagne (today Finistère), France.^[1][9] Her son Joseph and her granddaughter Marie-Josèphe, daughter of Joseph, died at the same hospital three days earlier.
